What is a Root Canal?

A root canal at Baywood Dental Group may not be as painful as you think. Most everyone has heard a tale or two about a traumatic experience involving some sort of dental procedure. However, most of that information has been passed on-and-on from person to person. Things tend to be exaggerated after being passed around for any length of time. Much like in a game of telephone. Our practice is taking this opportunity to clear up any misinformation you may have heard giving root canal procedures a bad name.

A root canal is the process of removing the damaged or diseased pulp of a tooth, along with any dead roots. Most of the time, this procedure can take place in one to two visits. The practice is standard. The tooth is fitted with a rubber dam to separate it from the others and keep saliva away. Now, the endodontist creates an opening in the tooth leading to the pulp chamber. Any damaged/ infected pulp is removed using tiny specialized instruments. Once clean, the chamber and corresponding root canal are filled, then sealed to prevent bacteria or any infection until the next appointment. This usually concludes the first visit.

Because the initial filling is temporary, it will be removed at the second appointment and replaced with a permanent sealant. Depending on the tooth, a cap or crown may be used to protect it further. This extra measure is taken to prevent bacteria or food from entering the cavity after the pulp and root(s) have been removed.

During a root canal procedure, a local anesthetic is used to numb the tooth for comfort. Recovery is very fast.
